I read in article before that the stomach is covered by layers of fat. Underneath it are the muscles. So does that mean that if you want to have a 6 pack it would be useless to do crunches since it only strengthens the ab muscles and yet they are still covered with fat? And therefore the right thing to do would be focus on cardio exercise first and when you think u dont have those unwanted fats anymore in your stomack, then thats the right time to do the crunches?
It's not actually useless, it's just that when you still have a layer of fat covering your midsection, you really won't see your sixpack. So you have to do a combination of both. If you do cardio then lose the midsection, that still won't give you the sixpack abs if you don't do any ab exercises.
Mariusz is correct. White it's true that all humans have a "6 pack" underneath our skin/fat layers, they're quite flat actually, so you won't see them in a way like most "fitness models" abs aka, washboard style. You need to use resistance exercises to bulge them up a little.
Doing ab work strengthens the whole core muscles, aiding posture, spine position and support among other things. The vanity aspect is just a bonus.
