If you got the cash to buy whey protiens suppliment then buy one. Money is not wasted on such quality suppliment. you can take at least 1gram of protein per pound of your bodyweight.

Bodybuilders strive to consume 1-2grams of protein per pound of body weight. A protein supplement that is low in calories and carbohydrates is an excellent way of getting some extra protein.

It isn't really that expensive if you think about it... Lets say 5ibs of ON Whey Protein Gold Standard costs P2500 (price I got mine at a local store) that has 80 servings so that comes out to about P31.25 per serving. Here is the nutritional information.

Calories 130
Calories From Fat 15
Total Fat 1.5g
Saturated Fat 0.5g
Trans Fat 0g
Cholesterol 30mg
Sodium 100mg
Total Carbohydrate 4g
Sugars 1g
Protein 24g

P31.25 is a small price to pay for the convenience of getting 24grams of lean quality protein. Similarly you could probably eat 3/4 of a chicken breast it would have roughly the same amount of protein and cost less but then you'de have to buy it at the supermarket and cook it before you can eat it.

Personally I would rather have the chicken breast but since I work 9 hours a day and have a child to take care of when I get home the protein supplement makes life a lot easier...

However, whey alone is not good as meal replacement.

Micellar Casein, Whey and Egg vs. Just Whey
New research proves conclusively that the combination of the anti-catabolic, long-term affects of micellar casein protein and the short-term, anabolic effects of whey protein is much more effective for muscle growth and repair than whey alone. It's a well-known fact that muscle mass is influenced by the rate of anabolism which increases muscle and the rate of catabolism which reduces it, a continual process in the human body.

Whey protein is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, causing an anabolic effect. Yet, the effects of whey are short-lived as the blood amino acid levels of whey only last for a short period of time. Micellar casein enters the bloodstream at a much slower rate while its effect on blood levels of amino acids lasts for hours, unleashing its anti-catabolic action.
