Broadening vs. Thickening

I am horizontally broadening - which means i lack thickness in my body. I have serious problems with my chest and back programs. They don't seem to get me any thicker. Anything i could do or concentrate on para kumapal naman yung built ko?

i noticed kasi that Paolo, with his obsessive love for working out has gained a lot of mass sa chest and back. ako, wala...i have lats and chest pero they do not compensate to the shoulders i have, aside from the still skinny arms i have.

what should i do? should i do more rowing movements and more bench presses?

Compounds... Yes...

Back: Deadlifts, BB and DB Rows, Pullovers
Chest: Try DB and Cable presses.

Ako pretty much the same as you, although after 3 months of experimenting, I've finally settled with several exercises that gives those parts a good beating for my body.

Back is really hard to train since its very complex and it's so much stronger than the muscles that you use to train the back (namely, fingers, arms and biceps).

Concentrate on the stretch and squeeze of every rep...

Very good question jadrobe.Same problem as mine.Kaya nga I even posted a question on how to gain upper chest mass.Kung minsan nga I think insufficient protein(inspite na nagsusupplement na ako).Probably genetics has some important role here also

ewan ko lang ha, ito ba problema ng mga ectomorphs? kasama ba sa pag-kapal ang pag-taba? (not FAT taba pero mass taba?) darn! i hate my body type!

does this mean, for chest, hindi advisable ang flyes, cable crossovers and dips (for chest)???

puro ba bench press dapat ko gawin and umiikot sa flat, incline and decline ang program natin?

What Billyboy said is right too, you must eat hehe a lot...

You can definitely still do isolations to finish up the slow twitch fibers. Dips are great compounds and should be done no matter what for relative beginners like us.

Billy: Try doing inclines BEFORE you do flats, so you can concentrate more on the weak spot.

buti ka pa, ako i still dunno what bodytype i have..

anyway, kasama sa bulking-up ang pagtaba. kaya yung iba Bulk then Cut. bulking-up is really dependent on your daily food intake.

Hi jad

maybe its genetics, does your parents and relatives have same body type as yours?

Thanks the veed.I've been doing dips 3x a week, guess what, triceps ko ang lumalakas(not that I don't like it,now I do dips with very heavy weights),for dips to target the pecs, dapat daw 45 degree angle when you see yourself in the mirror(sa side).Siguro my next question is hypothetical. Can a Palito be an Arnold?Or at least a Brad Pitt in built?

OT: Genetics only dictate your muscle TYPE, not potential for growth. I assure you that if you get a natural endo, but starve him, he'll look like Palito eventually. You can get Palito, feed him right, train him right, he'll be big.

There's no point trying to have someone else's physique, that's why judging BB competitions have always been relatively controversial since your frame will dictate how your muscle will generally shape, but there's no dictated limit to size increase.

For example, Arnold's chest is probably one of history's best in terms of shape and peak. Mass wise, modern age BB have much more mass than his, but most don't look as full and as evenly packed as his. That's his genetic advantage. High and wide ribcage helps a lot too.

Biceps is one of the most common "genetic" differences you see. Me, for example, can get my bicep to thicken quite a bit. Because my muscle is long (distance between the elbow fold to the base of the bicep), with this kind of muscle, it looks full if my arm is extended. The bicep muscle protrudes/bulges SIDEWARDS if I flex it (assuming I'm the one looking at it - pababa). In contrast, people who have short biceps have great peak, when they flex their bi's, the bulge is high, but when straigtened or relaxed, it looks thin.

Same as lats. Some people have long lats (extends near their lower ribs) like Franco, some have high lats that extends only to mid ribcage. The former will give a thicker look, the latter will give a wider wingspan look.

But almost everybody can be big (unless you have bone, growth or hormonal problems)

wish i had your problem. :)

my case is the opposite. i feel i thicken too much. my family and friends say that im nauukot because my upper back continues to thicken. but i only want to broaden my body appearance though. u know, the jomari yllana bodytype. slender but broad. guess i have genetics for a bouncer-type body. :>
